February 1st, 2009

First things first, we really appreciate all the well-wishing and kind words directed our way since our cryptic little announcement a few days back.

Distribution into the direct comics market system is something we’ve had on the drawing board almost since we launched in 2005. It’s a daunting prospect and we’ve spent a lot of time over the last couple of years puzzling through how we wanted to approach it. We had planned to roll out a brief pilot program of sorts – offering a limited catalog of items available only to a handful of volunteer retailers – by summer of this year. And then take what we learned from that program, retool a bit, add the full catalog, and launch the actual service sometime this fall.

The best laid schemes of mice and men …

With news of the developments in the direct market in January and their impact on independent publishers, we began getting pummeled with messages and emails all asking a variance of the same thing “When are you guys going to start distributing to comics shops?”

We realized that a multi-month pilot program, an indeterminate retooling period, and an official launch 9 months or so from now were off the table for good. Circumstances were dictating the pace. We couldn’t wait any longer.

We’ve got to go now.

This is less than ideal, but unavoidable. We know that just as with the launch of Ka-Blam and then again with IndyPlanet, there will be unforeseen complications, fits and starts, and hiccups aplenty along the way. Things will not always go smoothly. We’ll make mistakes, but we’ll correct them. It’ll certainly take us a while to get our legs under us and to fully hit our stride. We beg your indulgence during this time and promise you that your patience will be rewarded.

There will be a lot more information in the coming days, but for now here are the basics –

Ka-Blam Digital Printing is launching a print-on-demand distribution service to direct market comics shops.

To avoid confusion with our existing business model at Ka-Blam.com the direct market distribution system will be its own entity with its own unique site and url.

ComicsMonkey is the entity and comicsmonkey.com is the url. Other than this blog, there’s not much to see here just yet. We’re putting the site together behind the curtain.

As in the current distribution system ComicsMonkey will sell products to retail outlets on a non-returnable basis at a discount off of cover price. And that’s pretty much were the similarities with the current system end.

This is true print-on-demand … so the entire ordering process will be very different for both suppliers and retailers. But particularly for suppliers (publishers and creators).

How so? No benchmarks. No thresholds. No minimum orders. No prejudice against offering items again … as matter of fact your items once listed will always be available. ALWAYS.

For those of you familiar with our online shop IndyPlanet.com you’ll find a lot of similarities between the way IndyPlanet operates and the way ComicsMonkey will operate. The primary difference of course being that IndyPlanet is a retail site that will accept orders from anyone and ComicsMonkey will accept orders only from registered, verified comics retailers.

For suppliers (publishers) here’s how it will work.

For retailer specific information please click here.

Go read. We’ll wait.

Back? OK, so … that’s the basics.

Like, I mentioned there will be a lot more in the way of specifics in the coming days.

I know that this information probably excited many of you and at the same time I’m sure there are a few reading this who had hoped for more or are disappointed by parts of our plan. There are aspects of the plan we’re not happy with, but in all cases we’ve made an effort to create the best program that the circumstances allow. Do we wish the retailer discounts could be steeper? Absolutely. Would we like to be able to pay publishers a higher percentage of cover price? Goes without saying. But we’re subscribers to the economic theory of enlightened self-interest. So while our goal is to create a system that not only preserves independent comics and allows their publishers and creators to prosper in a way that they haven’t for almost a generation, we recognize that we can’t help anybody if we can’t first stay a profitable business.

There’s no road to follow here. No one’s tried anything exactly like this before. But we’re excited to be blazing the trail.

So what’s next?

Right now the shopping cart system is installed and we’re working on the custom code and modifications to the system that will integrate with the software at Ka-Blam and track the sales and earnings. Once we’re convinced that’s functional and working properly, we’ll begin the process of building the catalog and registering retailers.

We’ll announce here whenever the ComicsMonkey listing editor is in place at the Ka-Blam User Control Panel. We’re working on a mechanism that will allow those of you with IndyPlanet listings to create a similar ComicsMonkey listing with a few simple clicks.

OK … so this has already run on much longer than I had intended it to but I’ve got just a couple of more things …

Earlier I asked for your patience while we get our infrastructure in place. I’m also going to ask that you not deluge me with messages and emails. I know you’ve got questions and I want to give you answers. That’s why we’ve started this blog. Things will go a lot more smoothly if I answer those questions publicly once rather than having to answer them over and over again privately. Please keep in mind that at the same time we’re building this new system, we’re also cranking out orders at Ka-Blam for convention season and IndyPlanet orders are absolutely exploding!

So feel free to ask your questions here if you’d like. But please check and make sure someone else hasn’t already asked and received an answer to the same or a similar question.

Lastly, I want to ask your help.

This is a huge undertaking and we’ve got a small staff and only so many hours in a day. A print-on-demand distribution system has enormous potential for growing the independent press. Many creators could benefit greatly from this, but only if we work together.

What we need is for creators to voluntarily act as liaisons between us and their local retailers.

If you’re an independent creator or publisher then it’s very likely that you’ve got a good relationship with your local comics shop owner or manager. You know them a lot better than we do or ever could. Let them know what we’re doing. Tell me them who we are and why you’re excited about it all. Show them the site once it goes live. Show them your books on the site. Show them some of the other great titles at the site. Tell them why they should register and why they should place an order. Tell them that if they support us, then we’ll support them. We’ll build a section here showcasing our retail partners. We’ll post a picture of their store, their location, their store hours, etc. And we’ll encourage our customers at Ka-Blam – and even at IndyPlanet – to shop there.

We can do this, but we can’t do it without your help.

I’ll stop here for now. If you have questions … fire away.

Retailers must be registered and verified to place orders at ComicsMonkey.com.

– Please NOTE: Retail order registration is not yet open. We’ll announce here as soon as it is. –

Both processes are far less painful than they sound. Registration is simply a matter of creating a username, password, and profile – basically telling us who you are and where you want your products shipped. Verification is about providing us with a valid resell certificate from whatever state or states (or country if outside the US) in which you do business. We’ll sell to brick and mortar stores as well as to online shops (however online shops must have an active, functioning comics-based site already in place).

At the time you register you can request a free sample packet. The sample packet will contain a few items from our catalog – some comics, a trade paperback, and a t-shirt, etc.

No cost to you. We want you to see the type of comics we offer and the quality of the printing.

As to ordering from us … it couldn’t be easier. There’s no phonebook-sized monthly catalog for you to slog through, no advance ordering, no new-book-Wednesday. With print-on-demand there’s no need for advance ordering at all.

Our entire catalog will be online and available 24-7-365. If it’s listed on our site it is available immediately. You can order today and have it on your shelves in about a week. We’re anticipating a few dozen products available at launch and (if our growth rate at IndyPlanet.com is any indicator) hundreds and hundreds more to follow in very short order. The catalog will be categorized by genre, product type, and rating, as well as by status — “New”‘, “Featured”, etc. Browsing will be easy to the point of almost effortless.

If you think the only great comics out there are found in that phonebook-sized catalog mentioned earlier, then you’re in for an enormous surprise. Just hop on over to IndyPlanet.com and take a look around if you don’t believe me. There’s some absolutely TERRIFIC stuff there. Many (hopefully ALL) of the comics you see there will also be available at ComicsMonkey in relatively short order.

At ComicsMonkey.com there will be detailed descriptions of each product and large sample graphics. The ordering process will be driven by an OS Commerce based shopping cart system. Powerful, but very simple to use. Find an item or items you want, put it in your cart, adjust the quantity, and checkout. Your discount will be calculated at checkout and you’ll receive an invoice.

Our beginning discount will be 35%. Yes, we’d like to be able to increase that over time and after building working relationships with retailers, but for now that’s what it will be. All sales must also be prepaid at least for the foreseeable future.

All sales are final and non-returnable (except for damages of course). Retailer pays all shipping costs, though we’ll use the lowest cost shipping on a given order. USPS flat rate will be used whenever possible, unless the retailer requests otherwise.

There’s no minimum order, no order fees of any kind.

Supplier (Publisher) information

February 1st, 2009

So for suppliers (publishers) here’s how it will work –

1) You must be a registered user at Ka-Blam.com. It’s free and easy so don’t worry about that.

2) For anything you want to offer for sale at ComicsMonkey you must first place an order at Ka-Blam. You don’t have to actually buy anything if you don’t want. Your order can have a quantity of “0” and there’s no setup fee. The purpose of the order is to get you and your items into the Ka-Blam system. Each user is assigned a user number and each item has an item number – this is how we track and manage everything. If you’re already a registered Ka-Blam user and have placed orders in the past for the same items you’d now like to sell them you’re already covered.

3) Once you and your items are in our system you’ll be able to be to access the ComicsMonkey listing editor. Publishers are responsible for creating and maintaining their own listings and sample graphics (within our guidelines of course). Publishers will set their own prices as well (although again this MUST be within our guidelines).

4) Once your listing has been approved, it’ll go live in the catalog.

5) With each order of your item … from the very FIRST item sold … you’ll accumulate earnings.

Everything so far is virtually the same as at IndyPlanet, but here’s where things vary. At IndyPlanet you set your price and then receive the difference between that price and your printing costs. It can’t work that way here because ComicsMonkey is selling to retailers who in turn have to resell the item at an increased price to make a profit. So instead you’ll get a percentage of the cover price, probably 10% but we haven’t set this in stone yet. I know that sounds like a low number, but it’s really not. If your cover price is $3.99 (which will be a common cover price) then your earnings on each sale will be $0.40. If you have a trade paperback priced at say $19.99 then you’ll earn $2 on each sale.

Yes, those numbers are lower than what you would make on a similar sale at IndyPlanet. However, IndyPlanet is just one outlet. ComicsMonkey has the potential to get your products into many, many outlets worldwide. So while your earnings per item will be lower, the volume could potentially be much higher.

Keep in mind that you as publisher at ComicsMonkey have NO out of pocket costs. None. You have no printing costs, no shipping costs. We sell your book, we print your book, we ship your book, we pay you.

And — as we do with IndyPlanet listings — you’ll be able to monitor your sales and earnings from your Ka-Blam User Control Panel and request a payout via Paypal at ANY time and for ANY amount that you’ve earned.

And at ComicsMonkey (as at IndyPlanet) you’ll be able to list comics, trade paperbacks, posters, and t-shirts.

Fact of the Day: Christmas

Christmas is from the Old English words Cristes maesse, “the mass or festival of Christ.” The first celebration took place in Rome about the middle of the fourth century. The exact date of the Nativity is not known, but even in pre-Christian times the period from December 25 to January 6 – now known as “The Twelve Days of Christmas” – was considered a special time of year. The abbreviation Xmas, thought as sacrilegious by some, is entirely appropriate. The letter X (chi) is the first letter in the Greek word for Christ.

Did you get it? My Christmas card? I swear it’s in the mail…wait….ooopsie, my bad. I haven’t sent the damn things out yet! Best intentions and all that. See, this hasn’t been the best of times for me. Christmas was kinda a drag this year. No time, no money…I’ve had a lot better.
Oh yeah, and I LOST the cards shortly after I made them and printed them. So. Your card is coming soon.

I did some cute things for the kids’ teachers and the school they go to. I’ve taken out the bells and whistles–the glitter backgrounds and 3-d snowflakes ‘n stuff, but it’s all good.

I WANTED this:

oh yea, the Stienway Sound System $150,000 of pure acoustic bliss. Able to make the fat lady give up singin’ and run away in tears. This puppy give the highest trebles and the basses of bass. Truly the awesomest of awesomest sound systems there is.

What we GOT this:

The Roku player.
What it is:

Streams Netflix Watch Now titles to your TV; affordable $100 price tag; unlimited viewing with no additional charge beyond standard ($8.95 or higher) monthly Netflix fee; PC-free movie watching; simple setup; includes built-in wired and 802.11g Wi-Fi networking; works with all TVs; upgradeable firmware allows for new features, interface improvements, and bug fixes.

From a design standpoint, there isn’t much to critique. Measuring 1.75 inches tall by 5.25 inches wide by 5.25 inches deep, the box is slightly smaller than your typical cable modem, but instead having just an Ethernet port on the back, it’s equipped with all manner of audio and video outputs: HDMI, component video, S-Video, and composite video ports, as well as digital optical or the standard red/white analog stereo outputs.

The remote is about as simple as it gets: in addition to a five-way directional pad, play/pause, fast-forward, and rewind keys, there’s a “home” button that takes you to your list of queued movies. The remote works well enough, and since it’s a standard infrared model you can easily program its functions into any worthwhile universal remote.

Once you have all your cables connected, you plug the AC adapter into the box, wait a few seconds for the box to start up, and make your way through the simple setup wizard using the included remote. You’re given the choice to connect to your home network via a wired or wireless connection and can fairly easily switch from one connection to another if your wireless connection is spotty. If you have a secure wireless network (WEP or WPA), you simply key in your security key via an onscreen virtual keyboard.

The first time you set up the box you’re given a special code. Entering it on the Netflix site will link the box to your account. Once the code is entered, your box is activated in less than a minute, and whatever is in your Instant Queue online will immediately populate the Instant Queue on your box. (The Instant Queue is available to all Netflix users as a separate and distinct list from the main DVD-by-mail queue, so you can manage both lists independently.) Add a movie to your Instant Queue online and that movie will appear within seconds on your box. However, you can’t add titles or navigate Netflix’s vast library from the box itself; you can only search for and add titles via your computer. (But because the videos are streaming from Netflix’s central servers, not your computer, you don’t need to have your computer powered on while you’re watching the Netflix Player.) Because you’re just using the standard Web site interface, queue updates can be added on any Windows, Mac, or Linux PC, using any browser. We appreciated that Netflix and Roku kept things simple.

As for video quality, it’s not bad–but it’s not terribly good, either. Depending on your connection speed, your video is currently streamed at one of three bit rates, with the highest maxing out at 2.2Mbps. We sometimes started at 1Mbps but on the three broadband connections we tested the box with–two were at home (cable modems), one was at work–all of them ramped up to 2.2Mbps fairly quickly. We got an occasional dropout from one wireless connection we were using, but overall the connections–and video–remained solid. That said, a fourth test using a low-grade DSL connection resulted in the low-resolution stream, which was effectively unwatchable. In other words, if your broadband stream can’t maintain a 1Mbps or (ideally) 2.2Mbps connection, the Netflix Player isn’t for you.

Currently, the box outputs video at 480i resolution. Roku representatives told us that the box is capable of higher resolutions–up to 1080i HDTV–but for now, with most people constrained by bandwidth limitations, 480i is what you get. The picture is generally quite watchable, but it is soft and exhibits some occasionally noticeable video-processing glitches. (Geeks, take note: the movies are streamed with the same VC-1 codec used ..ay Discs and Xbox Live Marketplace’s video downloads.)

I LIKE this Roku box. Truly. It’s just NOT there yet. It’s kinda like when you bake this awesome apple pie, and it really is delicious, but if you’d just let it sit in the fridge for a day, the flavors would be that much more intense and it would be perfection.

This player has a great start. But the fact that the resolution is lower then promised, not quite as many high def streaming things on NetFlix, kinda has a little bit of a suck factor. It just needs a little seasoning time. But it’s still great! And for $100 what’s not to love.

Next? My 2008 tops list

Wednesday November 19, 2008

This is the 324th day of the year, with 42 days remaining in 2008.

Fact of the Day: renaissance

“The Renaissance is the name of an important artistic and scientific period that began about 1400 and went on for 200 years in Italy and, eventually, all of Europe. Renaissance means rebirth and this period was a time when scholars revived interest in learning and the arts of ancient Greece and Rome.

People began to think of new ideas and develop art techniques, the sciences, architecture, and inventions. They looked for new lands and trade routes — and their ideas and thirst for learning spread, especially through the new technology of printing. Important artists of the Renaissance were Rembrandt, Leonardo da Vinci, Cellini, Raphael, and Michelangelo. Important scientists were Copernicus and Galileo and philosophers were Machiavelli and Erasmus. Important writers were Montaigne, Shakespeare, and Cervantes. Columbus made his famous discoveries during this time.

The most important philosophy developed was called humanism — a new way of thinking that challenged the authority of the church and allowed scientists, artists, and scholars to produce their own ideas. The people of the Renaissance looked for new explanations, new ways of doing things, new interpretations of writings, new ways of building their homes and public buildings.”

THE TOOTH AND NOTHING BUT THE TOOTH
(Or you can’t handle the Tooth!)

The end of September beginning of October had me spending most of the time running back and forth between my dentist (truly she is a demon) and her pal, an oral surgeon (truly he is hell-spawn–but I do THINK he tried to help).

See, I had this really bum tooth and it needed a root canal–or so she said. She has diploma’s on the wall and a “Dr.” before her name so I would think that she could handle pretty much anything related to teeth.
No.

She sends me to another dentist for this root canal.

See, I cracked my tooth because I have a nasty habit of trying to open paint tubes with my back teeth–DON’T DO IT! E.V.E.R!!! Opening tubes up like this made me have multiple cracks in my molar. How it hadn’t cracked open she wasn’t sure.

So it ended up that I had to keep running back and forth to this other doctors office which was about 30 miles from where I live, 5 times–twice I needed to have additional root canals done–I hadn’t seen a dentist in 10+ years due to this overwhelming fear I have of them. It wasn’t fun. I guess they never really got the nerve dead because I kept feeling discomfort–ok, mild pain.

The surgeon asked if I wanted additional medication–I being stupid, didn’t understand what he was offering. I couldda had some good stuff!

Next time I know–always answer Yes, Please!!! to this question.

I did tell him I wasn’t a hero and I would rather not feel anything. Drilling and grinding out the root is the worst. Gah! The stuff nightmares are made of.

Anyway, I think I have my tooth fixed now. It feels weird to have a fake tooth in my mouth. But better then the gaping hole, and throbbing, mindless pain.
I kept wondering how people did dental work without all the niceties we have today–even WITH those nice little shots that are supposed to make it so you don’t feel anything, I still felt lots and lots of stuff.

GOOD GOLLY MISS MOLLY!!

My Molly Monster turned 2!

She is totally into Hello Kitty (she’s NUTS about Kitty!!) so we had a lot of fun with her party.

ANY LAST WORDS???

Do you know what your last words are gonna be?

I know.

They are gonna be:

OH SHIT!!

See, I got to say that quite a bit last month. I had a family reunion in WY. It was a wonderful trip. Best time I’ve had in a long time. The part that kinda sucked big time–was that Barry and the kiddies stayed in Florida due to work, school, commitments, etc. So I went it solo–which was weird! And left me feeling majorly guilty. Do you know how hard it is to have fun when you are feeling guilty?? I did an ok job of it…but it really was hard : O )
Anyway, the whole family (I am the most favored among 6 brothers and sisters) met at my brothers huge home in Wyoming. It was totally the awesomest of awesome times.
I got to be with one of my brothers that I hadn’t seen since my dad died in ’92. I really enjoyed being with my family. They are pretty darn cool. We have distance, major philosophical differences and years that separate us–be we all fit together.

This is a t-shirt I had made up for everyone. I didn’t put in 2 of my brothers-in-laws an one of my sisters couldn’t make it to the reunion, so I have to work on another version real soon. I think I’m going to make my brothers-in-law and Barry Injuns! That would be a hoot!

Here are two of my sisters-in-law wearing my creation. It was fun. We had a hole family shot with everyone in them.

This is the front of my brothers house. Well, I guess technically the front is really the back as the back faces the highway down the mountain. Hmmm. Whatever.

This is my brother Jeff and his wife, Candy. They were the hosts for this family reunion. Every in my family attended except for my middle sister and her hubby. And Barry. : O (

This is the view from their back porch. I wanted to never leave this spot.

This is the back of their house:

My brothers house was just amazing–have you ever sat on a tiled floor and had your butt kept nice and toasty warm because the floors have wire coils that heat them?

Indescribable.

I took showers in a shower stall that dwarfed my master bedroom. I soooo wanted to slip into the jacuzzi bath, but I never had the chance.

My king-size+ bed. Ahhhhh it was schweet. It was an adjustable bed so I could change how hard or soft it was.

Yummy!!

The kitchen was gourmet all the way. Barry would have gone nuts in there. My sister-in-law Marsha made us Jambalaya–she and my brother live in New Orleans area.

They KNOW Cajun cookin’. Her was to die for!

The wolves gather smelling the food.

That’s my sister in law Candy, my brother Chuck, my sis Jo and my bro Ken. I love the stance. Everyone is doing the same thing. I laughed when I saw this picture!

SHots of the porch

My family warned me multiple times that it was going to be really cold in WY while we were going to be there. Stupid me in all my Floridian bravado scoffed at their warnings. I can handle a little cold. I’m tough–what a bunch of wusses I kept thinking as I packed my luggage smugly. Wrong!!!

If Jeff and Candy hadn’t been so use to entertaining and having multiple coats and active wear for each of those guests, I’d be toast. My idea of dressing warm was a pair of cropped jeans–they hit right about mid-calf, I did bring a couple of sweaters–like that helped a lot.

I would be frozen solid on some mountain side but for them generously raiding their closets for my wussy ass. While there I got to go four wheeling!

Jeff helps us all gear up. Proper outfitting is definitely required!!

I have NEVER had as much fun or felt as free as I felt doing that.

Even wore camo!

Orange camo mind you! I NEVER wear camo.

It was ultra cool because this outfit I had there are only 6 of them in the world. I don’t remember the whole story if my brothers company made them for a company in France, or if this other company made them and they gave Jeff an extra–I don’t remember–but it was really fun to feel so exclusive!

That and I DID indeed rock florescent camo. Yeah, baby!

SIDE NOTE: I’m usually blond. I’ve been going thru a phase of late. My hair has been brown, red (which Barry REALLY liked), black ( again, which Barry REALLY liked) and I finally did this color before I left for the reunion so as to not scare the family too bad.

This jacket had pockets EVERYWHERE and I mean everywhere! I

t even had pockets with these little holders to put bullets in! It was weird. For all I know I still have things I left in that coat and no one will ever find it because of all the damn pockets. Man, I loved that coat!!

Four Wheeling was the awesomest. Jeff has about 5 four wheelers and this modified four wheeler that they called a Ranger–it seated 5 people.

Jeff shows Jo how the gears work. It would have been lost on me.

That looked fun, but I wanted to DRIVE!

Mind you, I don’t know anything about shifting gears or anything, so luckily they had this wussy girlie four wheeler that you basically sit on, turn the key and point it to where you want to go. Thank heavens!

My brothers and sister rode these racing four wheeler–a couple where called Predators and they looked it–alien, sleek, aerodynamic–totally would have broken my ass if I’d even TRIED to mount one.

So yep, I was perfectly happy on my sissy yet easy to ride four wheeler.

My sister of course road one of the full-on shift gears Road Warrior bikes.

She was awesome. She cheesed my off when we stopped at one overlook and she takes off her helmet and shakes out her blond tresses looking like a super model and here’s me taking off my helmet and resembling a porcupine–hair all sticking up and over the place. Make up all over the place…but it was the funnest time!

Jeff pointed out this one rounded off mountain top that in the winter they race up full throttle on their snow mobiles! How in the hell they did that I have no idea.

I tried to imagine the speeds and the power of the snow mobile you’d have to have and got mighty nervous.

The top of the hill didn’t look that big so I have no idea how you’d stop without falling over the other side–or maybe that’s what you do–you race up and over never to be heard from again.

Yep, I saw death all over that hill.

But damn, I wish I could have ridden up that thing just once. It looked so fun!!!

Got to see a bald eagle! That was awesome!

We drove in these back roads. Mountains surrounding us.

It was wonderfully cold, the color of fall trees all around us…

It was the start of hunting season up there, so I was mighty glad I had my florescent camo cause I know I’d have gotten my ass shot at.

We came across a number of hunters as we road. We probably pissed them off with our bad four wheeler convoy selves! But they don’t need to shoot poor deer anywhoo.

We rested at this place they call a “warming shack”.

In Orlando we’d call it a “crack house”.

But out there it’s a warming shack. It was this dilapidated cabin that who know how long has been there. But at the moment it was perfect.

We stood around and chatted and took photos and just drank in the scenery.

The in-law out-laws–Marsha, Dave and Candy.

We went back to the cabin and just chilled out for a couple hours. Walking around, chatting, and my favorite past time-eating : O )

Jo freshens up the kitchen.

The men folk watched the stock market plummet. They were glued to the t.v. It was kind a funny.

Later that evening my brother Ken took me out again on the four wheelers. We went deeper into the mountains. We must have stayed out for 3 hours or more.

I even saw a moose! Ok, it was dead–some hunter was skinning it, but I did see a moose. I think I saw more dead/ hunted animals out in Ut, WY, and ID then living ones.

The next day we went up to Jackson Hole, WY for some of MY kinda stuff–SHOPPING!

JACKSON HOLE, WY

As we are driving up this mountain pass, we see this guy and his dog just herding this herd of cattle.

I giggled–such a different world then where I live! A couple times driving around the town my brother lives we’d have to watch out for cattle drives.

And I thought our traffic here was hard to navigate. As we drove we started to see flurries!!

SNOW!

I was seeing snow for the first time in 10 years!

I wanted to run out and dance! It was clean, and fluffy and white and perfect. It made me remember how much I missed my family and wanted them to see this.

On the way up every once in a while we’d get out and take pictures and play around. Dave slips and slides.

My kids have never seen real snow–just the fake stuff they have at Disney…also known as soap bubbles. Jackson was a lot different then I remembered–of course I’d been their about 20 or so years ago.

The center of town was still the same–dead deer antlers all over the place.

Same with the stores. Got to be kinda creepy–sooo many dead things. Guess I’ve gotten spoiled by all the happy, happy here at Disney.

I bumped into an old friend.

The stores were awesome. It was awesome to just walk around.

At one point I just kinda wanted to be by myself–just catch my breath, people watch, etc. So we all agreed on a time to meet and we each went our separate ways.

All the couples stayed together, and Mom went with Jeff and Candy.

Mom takes in the scenary.

I felt happy to be alone. Mom was quite huffy that I would want to walk about unescorted. What can I say, Mom’s kinda old fashioned. Makes me smile.

Jeff and Candy pointed out what I thought was a ski run–and part of it was–but another part is used in some world snow mobile race.

Folks get these really powerful Snow mobiles and race them up this HUGE mountain (a bazillion times higher then the one I saw while four wheeling). The object is to see who can go the fastest, longest distance UP this crazy mountain without sliding down the mountain run and/or NOT dying while doing it. It looked neat!

At the appointed time we met up and went for some yummy pizza! We had all kinda run into each other as we were shopping–since Jackson hole really isn’t all that big.

It had snowed quite a bit and it was gratifying to hear it crunch under my borrowed boots. A couple times I just sat and watched people pass. Lots of tourists.

The next day we geared up to begin out trip to West Yellowstone!

We got up early that morning and found there had been quite a bit of snow fall. Which I loved!!!

But then I got to thinking snow–driving in mountain passes–hills–metal vehicles–my bad karma=probably not good. This is how my family thinks: Jeff drove his Toyota mega cruiser with shields, torpedo launch, and snow tires.

We drove in the rental van driven by my brother-in-law Dave. Dave who lives in CA with my sister. Sunny, warm California.

He was chosen as the designated driver in the snow because he’d lived in Michigan (over 20+ years ago!!!!) and therefore could drive in snow. I’d probably driven in snow more recently then him! It was funny.

He did great and just to jump ahead we DID make it out alive.

But we filed into the vehicles. I pulled my seat belt around me extra tight and thought that I could use my Mom as my air bag as she’s small. I AM her favorite after all so I knew she wouldn’t mind.

The drive from Jeff’s house to the south entrance of Yellowstone was maybe 2.5 hours. We stopped as we got close to the entrance and took photos that were similar to ones my brothers had done when they were kids.

It was fun to see them as itty-bitty kids and now as adults.

Group shot. Aren’t we all smashin?!?

We were really afraid that we weren’t going to be allowed into Yellowstone due to lack of snow tires or chains on our tires.

But Dave convinced the Park Ranger the van had all weather tires (doubt it would’ve made a difference even if they were all weather–ice and mountain passes don’t care about all weather tires).

So in we went.

Damn, had I forgotten how high mountains are!! Here we are driving in a blizzard (which was beautiful, btw!!) and going up and down these 2 lane roads with no guard rails most of the time.

And ice. And snow.

Lots and lots of snow!!

We did get to see lots of wild life. Deer, coyote, elk, and even a black bear!!!

Of course we saw buffalo!

I got extremely close to one.

They smell.

Real bad.

And big. They are REAL big.

People were freakin’ NUTS about the animals and getting their photos. Here we are sliding down mountains and idiots would be standing in the middle of the roads trying to photograph buffalo and such.

Couple times we almost took out a couple tourists. A couple times *I* almost got taken out. But I got some damn good shots!!

We were supposed to go to the West Entrance of Yellowstone–we had reservations at a hotel there. But somehow we turned right rather then left and found ourselves on the East entrance of Yellowstone!

So we turned around and headed UP the snowy, icy mountain we had just careened DOWN. After we get to the end of one treacherously icy road, we see a park ranger just about to close the road we were on! The snowy, icy. Just to let you know…parts of Yellowstone are an elevation of 12,000 feet.

Orlando, FL? Maybe an elevation of 3 feet. I bruise easily at that elevation.

Anyway, the ranger lets us thru with a look of either pure disgust or amazement–it was hard to tell thru my squinted with fear eyes.

Now, my family is pretty hard core Mormon. Ok, make that extremely VERY hard core Mormon–me not so much. I kept up the mantra of Oh Shit! Oh Shit! OH SHIT! Under my breath, and I think I might have heard more then one person in the van also saying the same thing.

Even Mom? We finally make it into the West Yellowstone area and find out hotel.

West Yellowstone is a really cute little area. It’s a winter town–in the season everyone rides their snowmobiles here–I kinda got this mental image of everyone dressed up in some weirdly modified snow/cowboy gear and riding into town on their snow mobiles. Weird images I had.

The hotel was ok. Nothing special. They did have a pool (indoor) and it was at the center of this little town.

I would love to see this place in full-on winter with all the snowmobiles. This place is where people come to rent their snow gear and then they go snow mobiling thru Yellowstone when it’s closed to all other traffic.

We unloaded and caught our breath after our , took a little nap, then met for dinner and…woohoo…shopping. Lot’s of little junky tourist shops that I spent too much money in. Kinda reminded me of here and Disney only everything was deer and moose themed rather then Mickey themed.

We went to this family restaurant that was fun. I can’ remember the name. But we caught it on it’s last night. They were closing down until snow mobile season–which meant they would reopen in January.

We all went back to our hotel rooms. It was like 9:30. So I was still kinda wired and wanted to kick back and watch t.v. So I’m washing off the grime of the day and about to turn to sit on my bed (I was sharing with my Mom as we were both solo for the trip) only to find her clicking the set off! I told her I wanted to watch t.v. for a bit and she snapped back that SHE was going to bed.

I was like…what and I can’t watch t.v.? She told me I needed to go to bed too! Me? Bed? at 9:30???

So luckily I had my MP3 Player and watched a few episodes of t.v. shows I’d missed with my headphones on. Kinda a buzz kill, but…

The next morning we again went thru Yellowstone. We thought that since it had snowed quite a bit that night that we wouldn’t be able to get thru…they had closed most of the roads, but the did allow traffic to Old Faithful. It was kinda scary driving–not nearly as steep as the previous day.

It was fun to see Old Faithful go off. I hadn’t been to see if since University. There has been a lot of building around that area. Lots of snow blowing and it was C.O.L.D!!!! We’d had a family reunion about 20 years ago in Yellowstone and stayed at the lodge. That was good times!

It was so other worldly here. At times I felt like I couldn’t take pictures fast enough. Everything changed so quickly with the light and snow. It was amazing!

We drove the long way around to get back to my brothers house. We went thru Idaho (gah! Never going back there–although I went to a rockin’ place called Craters of the Moon–absolutely one of the coolest places on earth).

Some picture of crappy Idaho.

Saw one of my old College and the dorm I stayed in (BYU-Rexburg) One of the most hellish times I’ve ever been thru and the main reason I had though I’d never go back to Rexburg.

This is arriving back at the house. The snow was amazing. I asked the nice pony to stand right there while I took his picture.
We finally made it back in and we all unpacked and just collapsed on couches around the house.

A cool spooky shot of the moon that night.

The next day my brother Jeff drove me back to Salt Lake City to catch my plane and return home to my family.

I just got back to Florida when we had to drive up to Mississippi to attend Barry’s brothers wedding.

I spent 2 days running around buying cute dresses for the girls, and a cute suit for Fox. I even got a really pretty black dress.

It was a mighty long drive–13+ hours with 3 kids in the car. But at least we’d installed a DVD player before we left. That was indeed a god send!! The kids loved it. I love going up to Mississippi.

It was fantastic to see Barry’s family. Fox calls Mississippi Missisnippy.

Such a different way of life.

The kids LOVED playing outdoors.

Molly has two speeds.

Run and…

I was so excited for Fox to ride a four wheeler–Barry’s family has one.

But Fox wanted NOTHING to do with it. I was thinking since he was so into cars, he’d love to ride this. Boy, was I wrong!

Now Chloe and Molly literally FOUGHT over who would ride the four wheeler next.

We had to keep an eye on Molly because if the four wheeler got too close she’d try to pull Chloe off!

We met Barry’s brother Shane on Friday at a Chinese Restaurant (sucked). He seemed ok–not like I would have thought someone getting married the next day would be…but whatever.

That night Barry and his parents went to a wedding rehearsal dinner. I stayed home and watched Tina and my kids. That all went well. And then they came home. Something was wrong. Barry helped me finish bathing the kids and I could tell he was mighty upset. But he wouldn’t talk about it.

He said he and I needed to go talk. I was thinking the wedding might be off. He said it might be…but we needed some place to talk.

We got the kids down to bed, and then his folks said they’d watch the kids while we went to talk. Yep. Something was in the air.

Our usual place for deep discussions is Taco Bell–we can sit and talk and get free refills, too–what’s wrong with that?!?

Many a book has been plotted and laid out at Taco Bell. But it’s 10:00 on a Friday night in Mississippi–which is almost like a Sunday in Salt Lake City–everything is closed. So our big discussion takes place in our car.

What happened (as I understand it…mind you even now nobody is talking about it) the bridezilla suddenly and spitefully decided she didn’t want kids to attend the wedding…only she made it sound like it was OUR kids–which she’d never met to punish the grooms side of the family.

I’ve only met this girl twice and those were very brief meetings that didn’t go over very well.

From what I understand there has been some really heavy shit between Mormons (the grooms family) and Baptists (the bridezilla’s family) and it all came to a head at the rehearsal.

Even the Preacher and his wife where both bitches to Barry, and his Mom and dad. The brides parents didn’t even have the balls to introduce themselves to Barry’s family or to Barry.

In the South religion is EVERYTHING. You have to belong to the right church–Baptist although it seems there is a difference between Baptist and 1st Baptist–whatever, pray to the right God, pay the right percentage of tithing and NOT get caught leaving the liquor stores with your treasure–it’s all weird to me.

But it turns out that any all religions in the south pretty much hate Mormons. Me? I don’t care anymore. I think I’ve totally lost any interest in organized religion. But threats were made on both sides, yelling ensued, hurt feelings were had and I missed it all.

And the brother didn’t have the balls to stand up and say this isn’t right.

I didn’t get to see anything. Only this.

Barry in his Tux and his Mom and Dad all gussied up.

I know he hurt. He wanted to have the kids there for this moment.

I think most of all he wanted to dance with his daughters. But then we found out Baptists don’t dance so…

The wedding did go thru, but Barry refused to stay around for the reception. I had to try and explain to Chloe who had been so excited about the wedding that she couldn’t go and then try to explain that she didn’t do anything wrong–that was hard.

I was pissed. Barry missed time at the office, I missed work, the kids missed school, I was out money for day-care–I was in a dark place. If we had been informed before had that kids weren’t welcome, it would have been one thing, but to have come all this way and not been able to participate was a pretty shitty thing–especially in the manner it was done. And yes, of course, there were kids on the brides side.

YOU SAY IT’S YOUR BIRTHDAY… Yep, I turned another year older this week. I had a really fun one.

Initially, I had been thinking that Barry had forgotten my birthday. I had it all planned out–if he forgot my birthday I’d get the mini-laptop computer I’ve been wanting to add to my gadget collection.

However, when I got home from work, Barry had put streamers all over the kitchen, baked me a Shoo-fly pie (to die for!!!). had a dozen roses on the counter and had a present for me.

The only things I’d really wanted for my birthday were: Daniel Craig delivered nekkid and bathed to me
A mini-laptop and this:

A great post also at the same site:

vote
The best way you have of voicing your opinion in a way that can matter. Nothing’s perfect, and there’s always going to be mistakes, but there is simply no excuse for not casting a ballot for what you believe in. Take the time to understand the issues and then take the time to vote. Don’t let people who aren’t going to be around four years from now decide your future. Complaining without voting is worse than any hanging chad.
My conscience is clear because I took the time to vote.

Fact of the Day: popcorn

Popcorn is a special variety of dried corn that contains a high moisture content. About 14% of the composition of the kernel is water, which creates steam when the kernel is heated. This causes the popcorn kernels to explode and pop open because the steam cannot escape. Popcorn is typically available in white or yellow varieties. Yellow popcorn has a golden tint and is larger in size, while white popcorn is smaller in size, both as unpopped kernels and when popped.

When it pops, it has expanded to a volume 40 or 50 times its original size. There are three elements that make popcorn work like this: moisture inside the kernel, starch inside the kernel, and the hard shell surrounding the kernel. When a popcorn kernel heats up (either in a popper or in the microwave), the moisture inside the kernel expands.

Moisture, it turns out, is extremely important to a popcorn kernel. Unless the percentage of moisture in the kernel is just right, the kernel won’t pop. When the pressure inside the hard shell gets high enough, the kernel explodes.

Okay, okay, okay! That’s not true.

I love it beyond measure! Every once in a while you come across books and you become so tunnel visioned that you can’t do anything but read, read and then read some more!

I’ve spent far more money in the last month then I even want to think about with my local crack dealers (aka bookstores).

First up is:

Dark, scary, horrific, incredibly bleak.

Okay, yes, I get it–you’re a “legitimate” writer and therefore this book can by no means be considered science fiction.

But it is.

Post apocalyptic sci-fi.

Is it the best post-apocalyptic book out there? Hell no. Not even. But damn good. Even Oprah said so.

But would it have killed you to use quotation marks just once in a damn while?!?

I look forward to the movie. Will it be as bleak as the book? I think everyone was pretty much gutted after watching “Children of Men”, so bring it on.

Other BETTER post apocalyptic books to try:

* Lucifers Hammer by Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle (one of my top 10 books and probably THE best post apocalyptic book out there)
* Swan Song by Robert McCammon
* I am Legend by Richard Matheson

* Wolf and Iron by Gordon Dickson A man befriends a wolf and head west. Damn this was a good book!

* Folk of the Fringe by Orson Scott Card I am begrudgingly including this book even though I’m pissed as hell at what a blowhard Card has become. He use to be one of the most character driven writers out there. Now he’s just a scary hardcore nut job.

* The Postman by David Brin (soooo much better then the crap fest movie that Kevin Costner made)
Ok, ok, ok! I’ll do it…

* The Stand by Stephen King. The Deus Machina ending kinda cheesed me off, but hey, it’s Vegas baby.

COOL THINGS I HAPPENED UPON WHILE IN THE BOOKSTORE THAT I HAD TO JUST BUY:

Dracula and Tom Sawyer illustrated by Ben Caldwell. I loved these books and had to buy them. I stumbled across them hidden in an obscure corner in the kids section at Barnes and Nobles. Chloe was looking around with me and “the creepy vampire guy” on the cover caught her eye. The art caught mine as well! I ended up buying both and am so impressed by his figure designs and color schemes.

Bastard.

I had his Cartooning book from a few years ago. Talented guy this Caldwell fellow.

missed this book and series. Mainly because

it’s considered “teen lit” and even though it’s

sold a gazillion, it’s not considered

“mainstream” enough to put on the adult best

seller lists.

I hadn’t ever heard of it until I caught the

cover and brief article about it in

Entertainment Weekly a month or two back.

I decided I had to give it a try. I really

LOVED this book. It’s been a long time since

I’ve had a book (much less a series) where I

wanted to just let everything around me go

and read. I love the main characters

especially Bella. She’s feisty, a klutz, not a

bombshell beauty, smart, never EVER says

what I expect her to say and a great sense of

humor. Meyer did some fantastic character

writing here.

With in a month I had plunked down $60.00

for the rest of this friggin’ series. These are

huge THICK, heavy books. And expensive.

It took me a while to figure it out. I couldn’t

imagine why my hands and wrists were

hurting me so much. I thought it was just

because I had increased my writing, computer

coloring and drawing over the last couple

days. Then I’m sitting in my library (ok, the

bathroom) holding book 3 and it all finally

clicks! It was because I had been sitting and

holding this huge 4 volume series!

They are heavy, people!!

HEAVY!!!

I’ve been reading some of the blogs and

review of this series to see if others were as

bemused and befuddled as I was on the last

book –Breaking Dawn.

Good lord, are there are some freaky people

out there. Things ran from “Best book Ever”

to “OMG, Stephanie Meyers is Mormon and

her characters kissed! It’s pornography!”

Seriously. Some geek actually called this

pornography–one of THE most chaste books

I’ve read in a long time! This particular

reviewer went on to say she felt guilty

because she neglected her family because of

her addiction to this series. Yeah, blame

your need to escape your repressed reality on

a damn book and it’s author.

Get a grip!

I felt bad because most of the reviews and

forums I glanced thru were LDS (Mormon)

supported.

Another person thought Meyer racist and drew

parallels between Mormon beliefs of the

Nephite/Laminite/black/white thing. I think

this reviewer was reading far too much into

things.

The whole thing is a fairy tale, with it’s happily ever

after ending–I get it.

Bella Swan (Bella= beautiful) Swan (the ugly

duckling that turns into the beautiful swan by the end

of the series (becomes a vampire)….Yeah…a bit

hammer on the head, but ok. The titles all have a

lunar theme–Twilight, Eclipse, New Moon,

Breaking

Dawn.

Ok.

Cool. An homage to the old school vampire and werewolf tales.

Things that bugged me: Bella has a thing for a guy

that while he became “vamped” at 17 could

theoretically still be alive. Meyers should have made

him older. Edward (our hero) gets changed during

the Pandemic of 1918. So I kinda got the creepy old

guy thing wrapped around my head (see

McCain/Palin and creepy old dude post further

down). Couldn’t he have been 150 or even 200 years

old? Now THAT’s a vampire.

Bella gets preggers and has a kid at 18. The child is

also “special”.

Jake (the shape shifter) bonds (falls in love with)

with a baby–Bella’s baby. BUT A BABY!! Ok, I

shouldda seen that coming. Meyers talked about it in

an earlier volume…but still that creeped me out.

I really admired Meyers writing. I’m Mormon (ok,

I’m technically what we in The Church call a jack

Mormon–similar to a lapsed Catholic). I went to

BYU. It was really hard to be creative at BYU.

Seriously. You had very thin lines you had to walk.

So I guess at times I repress my writing because of

those very fear.

I believed Bella to be a teenager. Nothing Meyers did

made me not think her heroine wasn’t an angst

driven teen, thrown into a new environment, meeting

the love of her life, and then getting changed into a

vampire. The only thing I didn’t buy was in the first

book (Twilight) Bella nor any other teenager ever

uses a cell phone or texts anyone. As ANYONE over

the age of 12 knows nobody writes notes, nobody

simply calls anyone…every friggin’ teenager sends

text messages!!

Meyers writes fresh and intelligently. She wrote a

great series and “The Church” actually issued a

statement about her on the front page of it’s website

. Many church members don’t want her books sold

at Mormon bookstores (i.e. Deseret Books because

she deals with vamps and weres). I admire her. She

writes for herself and writes pretty darn well.

Harbinger F Paul Wilson

I LOVE Repairman Jack novels. I’m a little behind on them. I’m kinda not liking this Jack against The Otherness kinda thing. In Harbinger, Jack takes on a fierce cadre of baddies called the Yeniceri. I was worried that somehow Wilson was gonna go all “National Treasure/Da Vinci” code on me. That thankfully didn’t happen.

Jack always prides himself on keeping a tight control on EVERYTHING– situations and settings… Each book finds Jack loosing a little bit more of his being able to control anything.

I miss my smart-ass wise cracking Jack from early novels. I miss the street smarts we got to see he’d developed keeping just on the fringes of life.

But I’d never go without my man Jack. Wilson gave me one of the best literary creatures to fear — the Rakoshi.

Da man has my respect just for them.

GET THEE TO A GYM…ERY

Ok, I did it. I dragged my overly large lard ass out and joined a gym.

And I LOVE IT!

Stress, age, stress, laziness, stress, overly active sweet tooth and various and sundry childhood trama’s and another dash of lack of will-power and stress have left me with one hell of a large ass. Barry and I have realized that enough is enough. We have too much stress, a wonderful family, too many health factors that needed changing so we both made some major adjustments.

I joined a 24 hour access gym and it works perfect for me. I usually go late at night after I get off work from caricaturing. There are few people there and most of the time I have the whole gym to myself.

I feel better. I’ve been in a pretty dark place for a while and I am amazed at how much exercise really helps.
IN THE COMPANY OF CREEPY OLD MEN

I work 4 days a week up at Disney drawing Caricatures at various hotels. I love it a lot. I like the different people I meet, the different situations I’m in and the fact I am constantly drawing pretty much nonstop for 5 hours (No–really. Most nights once you sit down to draw you do not get up).

I like messing with people and I like to play games with myself while I draw people to keep myself going. When you’ve been doing this for as long as I have and met as many people as I have, asked the same damn questions I have over and over again, you start to compartmentalize people and categorize people. Last week I drew a couple. She was great and cute and we got a long fine. Then her boyfriend sits down. He’s big. Very quiet. Crew cut flat top thing going on with the hair, and obviously worked out–he was bulky in a gym rat kinda way. He sits down and I do the regular chatty stuff with him for a couple seconds. Then I asked him if he was a cop. He blinked then looked at his girlfriend and asked if she’d told me. She went wide eyed and told him no. I was proud of myself. Then in the next breath I realized I’ve been doing this far too long.

One of my favorite things to do is occasionally I will get kids (usually boys) that they only reply in “yes, Ma’m, no Ma’m” utterences. So I love to frame questions in my mind that in no way require a yes or no answer. Kinda a fun mind game. Ya gotta try it.

Every once in a while you come across things that make you shake/pound your head–mean clients, kids that won’t stop chomping their gum in your ear, people standing far too close to me (yes, I have serious issues about personl space).

The other night I’m drawing at The Caribbean Resort. And this old guy–seriously he was 80 if he was a day–walks up to me wanted me to draw his girlfriend. I’m kinda waiting for someone his approximate age and thinking this guy is an older man who has found his lost love and this is gonna be sooo fun and cute to draw…

…and then this child, this freaking-not-even-old-enough-to-wandering-around-alone KID walks up and sits down. There is NO WAY she was 17. No way. I’m floored and more then creeped out. He was pointing out she was his Flipina girlfriend and how beautiful she was. So SHE comes over and sits and starts doing the things I hate–posing and primping and fluttering her eyelashes and saying she’s just not pretty and all the while smiling and giving me her best beauty pageant smile.

And he’s all standing right by me all smoochy and hands grasping at her and…GAH! I don’t know which issue bothered me more–his obvious fetish with the fact his girlfriend was flipina or the fact she was way, WAY under-aged.

It seriously gave me the creeps. It messed with my mind for a long time.

And speaking of old creepy dudes…what the hell is up with John McCain?!?

This is the best ya got? A first-term Governor, a former mayor of a town of 6,000-9,000 people depending on what source you use. Who’s foreign policy experience amounts to “Alaska is close to Russia?!?!” (Fox News Channel’s Steve Doocy actually said that. Granted it Fox news…but WTF??!?)

Barry and I got married 19(!) years ago today. Yep. 19. Count ‘em. We met in a November, got engaged that February (the 13th in case you were wondering) and were married in June.

We waited 15 years to have kids–not really planned on it happening that way–we just…well…kinda forgot. We were meaning to…

But, thanks to Mr Potency and my overly fertile womb, we’ve had 3 kids in 4 years. Good thing we didn’t forget to have kids after all.

So…for my beloved poet in t-shirt and jeans–Happy 19th Anniversary.

Okay, so it’s been a while. Back in May we had Barry’s folks here for a short visit. We took them, Barry’s sister Tina, and our nephews Storm (who is staying the summer with us) and Dylan over to Daytona Beach to watch the Space Shuttle lift off.

We can see if from our backyard, but I thought it would be really cool to do something we’ve never done before and drive over to watch liftoff.

Traffic was a mess! I think every single person in central Florida had the same idea. It took forever to get there. A trip that should have taken about an hour, took almost 2.5 hours!

However, we finally arrived to the coast. Traffic, cars, thongs of people EVERY damn where! People where charging $20 -$30 to park on the side of the road, in store parking lots… I never in my wildest dreams thought traffic would have been like that. We were about to turn around and head to Coco beach when we came upon this little kids play park. Hardly anyone was there!

So we wheeled in, parked (for FREE!!!) got out our picnic lunch that Barry’s Mom had thought to make (me? I just charge off half-assed not thinking about snacks n’ stuff). We all sat under a beautiful shade tree and just chilled for an hour or so until launch.

Fox sneaks up on Daddy.

The crowd started really growing about half an hour until launch. We got up and moved over to this bridge to get a good view of the shuttle. From where we were at Cape Canaveral was about 8 miles away.

I guess I was expecting HUGE sound, loud booms, the roar of the engines—but nah. There was a little bit of sound, but not what I was expecting at all.

I took a video of it, but I don’t know if I can make it work. I’ll upload it and see.

It really was amazing to see and I’m glad we did it. I’d always wanted to. I have to admit that it wasn’t quite what I expected. I expected A LOT more noise. I didn’t expect the ba-zillion people.

I didn’t expect the cities of Daytona and Coco to be soooooo racist! I swear if I saw one more Confederate flag stuck on a t-shirt, a truck or flying outside someones trailer, I was gonna scream.

I wasn’t expecting the trip back to take 3 friggin’ hours!

Really.

IF you go, the only thing I can say is traffic will be horrible. I’d heard stories, but I didn’t think they could possibly be right.

Believe. Believe and be warned. You won’t get out from the shuttle launch for 4 hours. And it’s slow. Painfully, painfully. slow.

Guinevere

Guinevere was the wife of Arthur, legendary king of Britain, and best known in Arthurian romance through the love that his knight Sir Lancelot bore for her. In early Welsh literature, one Gwenhwyvar was “the first lady of this island”; in Geoffrey of Monmouth’s inventive Historia regum Britanniae (early 12th century), she was named Guanhumara and was presented as a Roman lady. In some accounts it was suggested that she was Arthur’s second wife.

THE FIRST CUT IS THE DEEPEST

The kids all went and got hair cuts. Chloe went first. She’s been asking for a spa day for a long time. Which is funny. I’m not the kind. Really. And here is my 4 year old asking for a friggin’ spa day. She is the ultimate girly girl.

Then Fox decided he wanted to try it. Sooo…the lady had extra time and up he went.

He did awesomely. I thought for sure he’d start crying and thrashing once he got in the chair, but he was fantastic.

I admit it. I kinda freaked when she brought out the shaver. I wasn’t envisioning anything too short. Fox has the most gorgeous blond locks.

It’s a bit too prep boy with all the gel in it. But the kid cleans up right nice.

MOLLY UPDATE
Molly’s latest PKU blood work came back really high for her–10.8!!

Of course, I flipped out and took it really hard. But we don’t have to change anything major really, just cut her proteins back in half again. So I went and loaded up on veggies and fruit. She can still have protein, but we are cutting waaaaaaay back again. We have to retest in a week.

GO TOWARDS THE LIGHT

Coloring in Photoshop is tough. For the life of me I just can’t get lighting. I can do it FINE when I watercolor, but sit me in front of the computer and…blank.

So I’ve started laying out little roughs of how I want back lighting, mood lighting, etc before I start computer coloring.
Guess I’m just old school. I still find writing easier on paper first, then tying it into the computer and editing it from there.

Some costume designs
Saturday May 24, 2008

This is the 145th day of the year, with 221 days remaining in 2008.

Fact of the Day: kimono
The kimono is a garment worn by Japanese men and women from the Early Nara period (645-724) to the present. Derived from the Chinese p’ao-style robe, the basic kimono is an ankle-length gown with long, expansive sleeves and a V-neck.

It has neither buttons nor ties, being lapped left over right across the chest and secured at the waist by a broad sash known as an obi. The short-sleeved kimono (kosode), worn by women as an outer garment, was introduced in the Muromachi period (Ashikaga shogunate; 1338-1573). The contemporary wide obi dates only from the 18th century. Although the kimono is not of Japanese origin, as is often supposed, its great beauty is attributable to 17th- and 18th-century Japanese designers.

The kids love to eat Chinese food. So as a lark we got Fox dress up in his Chinese outfit our friend picked up on his latest jaunt to Shanghi.

Chloe has a darling purple one and for the life of me I can’t figure out why I didn’t think to put her in it before we left.

Anyway, Fox enjoyed mugging in his outfit. I guess he liked the feel of the silk because now he always asks to wear it. He’s one good lookin’ kid. Someday I’ll figure out who his parents are.

FEELIN’ HOT, HOT, HOT!

It’s been a kinda crappy stressful time. At present all of us are sick in ways that nobody in polite society would dare mention. The kids have been sick with minor colds before but this time they all had high fevers, sever coughs, and just laid around. My kids DON’T lay around. I don’t think they are still even when they sleep.

I’ve been sick at the same time and now Barry’s caught it. It ain’t pretty, it ain’t fun and I’ll sure be glad to see the back end of this thing.

On the good side, all the kids want to do is snuggle–en masse. Sometimes they have fights for lap space, but pretty much all we’ve been doing is laying on the couch and watching Cartoon Network. Never thought I’d get tired of that, but I’m due for a break.

Because things have been going so well at Ka-blam, we’ve put the kids in Day Care twice a week. I’ve had a really hard time with that. Barry and I have always worked shifts–I watch the kids during then day then do my drawing at Disney at night and he…well…he watches the kids at night and works all night as well ; o )

OHMYHEAVENS is day care expensive! I don’t know how people do it. And I don’t know for how long we can do it. For 3 kids 2 times a week it’s $230.

Molly watches Daddy come in the room. I love how she lit up.

Getting ready for first day of school. Yep. I do need to finish my laundry. I think it’s still in the same spot from a few weeks ago.

Fox checks out the toy cars.

I certainly grown to respect the work that Thomas an Barry do at the offices. I don’t know how they get all the printing, coding, shipping, cutting, binding done that they do. They totally have my respect. They do this 7 days a week–I work occasionally from home doing the hand holding on the forum posts, and then twice a week in the office before going to work at Disney and I’m exhausted.

The kids seem to be adapting well to the Day Care thing. The first little while was really hard. One of us has always been there for the kids. Then they were rapidly put into a new environment. Molly has been having the toughest time.

I’m pretty sure that the crud we’ve all got now is a direct result of the germ factory that is Day Care. They kids had to miss Thursday because they were all sick and STILL the day care charged us for them. $230 down the drain. It hurt something fierce.

THE TOOTH AND NOTHING BUT THE TOOTH

On top of that I got a crappy tooth and had to have a root canal done. That set us back another $2100! Yep, sucks not having insurance.

For a little while there we’d come into a little bit of extra money…not enough to turn me Republican by any means, but it gave us a little cushion and we got to get a Toyota mini van (henceforth referred to as “The Mystery Machine”–Daddy and Fox’s idea, natch).

Molly has already made the Captains seat hers.

Chloe wears her IronMan shades.

So we now have 2 vehicles. But after my tooth episode, the sicknesses, car, various paying off of bills…back to middle class for us.

BOOK ‘EM, DANNO

Went to visit my local crack house–a.k.a. Books-A-Million. I picked up a really cook book…Buffy the Vampire Hunter: Panel to Panel

Of course Mystery Science Theater 3000 is my all time favorite t.v. show, but Buffy is a top 3 or 4 pick for sure.

It’s a really cool collection of comic book art, pin-ups and various and sundry. I’ve really enjoyed it. It’ll help me a lot when I start coloring Womblees again.
I spent far too much time and money at BaM. They had quite a few costume books from the Victorian period that somehow kept getting into my hands. I felt it my personal duty to go ahead and buy them. Haven’t had a chance to really look at them yet.

UNDER THE BOARDWALK..DOWN BY THE SEA…

We took the kids to Aquatica…a new waterpark that opened here.

Chloe is fascinated by the Commersons Dolphins. They have a water slide where a tube goes thru their habitat…but she was an inch or two too short. She took it like a champ. Maybe next time.

Fox catching a breath.

Chloe wanted to just watch the dolphins.

These Egrets are one pissed off species. I guess it’s their molting season, but MAN! where they cranky. If you came anywhere close to them they bristled up and hissed. Which they usually don’t do.

They are lovely and I want to try and paint this picture.

Went over to Seaworld for a bit and watched the Walrus.

More of the pissed off bird.

The green Moray eels are always fun to watch.

Molly is one smart cookie. Here she commands the dolphins with her mind.

JUST TAKE A PICTURE ALREADY

Got me a new camera. This is the first pict I took with it.

I’ve grown pretty weary of Kodak stuff–for me they’ve been pretty unreliable, and subject to frequent breakage that isn’t kid related. I didn’t want a “big boy” camera (big lens), just one that I could keep in my purse. Yet I also wanted one with a good optical zoom and good mega pixels. So I arrived at the Panasonic DMC-TZ5K

I LOVE this camera! It’s got 9.1 megapixels, 10x optical zoom, face recognition, image stabilizer, and one bitchin’ LEICA DC Vario-Elmar lens. Schweet! The shutter speed is very fast, no lag, great view screen (3 inches!!!), and does great movies. Extremely easy to use with it’s Intelligent Auto or you can play around with your own settings. I couldn’t be happier with this camera.

WOULDN’T CHA LIKE TO BE A PEPPER TO?

I LOVE hot sauces. The hotter the better. BUT…they gotta have flavor. Any sauce can take the roof off your mouth thru the burn, but it’s gotta taste good.

Came across this Habenero sauce called Iguana Radioactive Atomic Pepper Sauce. Cool label, too. It’s by Half Moon Bay Trading. It rocks! Lots of flavor and ooooooohhhh what delightfully painful burn is in store.

Back when we use to go to New Orlean with regularity, there were lots of places that sold hot sauces. I became addicted to them. But I also really love the art. Some awesome names and labels.

BEST OF LUCK TO YA!

The belief that it is lucky to pick up a horseshoe comes from the idea that it was a protection against witches and evil generally. The legend is that Mars (iron) is the enemy of Saturn (God of the Witches); consequently they were nailed to the house door with two ends uppermost, so that the luck did not “run out.”

INDIANA JONES ALERT!!

Ok, I’ve not seen the movie, I’ve heard weeping and wailing from various friends about the movie, but I got a spoiler just from watching a stupid commercial.

IT’S ALIENS???

WTF???

Ok, I bought and loved the archaic Jewish Mysticism, I enjoyed the South America spookiness…but…ALIENS????

Damn.

Take a listen

If you’ve never listend to him before, give my pal Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds a listen.
Dig! Lazarus Dig is one of his best albums in forever–and this cats been around a long time.

Also, listen to “Red Right Hand”.

You’ll be glad you did.

The stripes in toothpaste are created by a special device fitted to the nozzle end of the tube. A colored toothpaste is first filled around the special fitting, the white toothpaste is filled second, which holds the colored toothpaste in place at the top of the tube.

When the tube is squeezed, the white toothpaste would run through the special inner tube and the pressure of the squeeze simultaneously forces the colored toothpaste through the tiny orifices at the end. The toothpaste emerges perfectly striped.

The first toothpaste mentioned in recorded history was devised by Egyptian physicians about 4000 years ago. It was made from powdered pumice stone and strong wine vinegar and brushed on with a chew stick.

I love the feeling of freshly bushed teeth, but I’ll be damned if I can stand to have the stuff on my skin. Can’t stand the smell, can’t stand the feel…but give me good ol’ freshly scrubbed teeth anyday!

I got to do one of the funnest gig’s I’ve gotten to do in a while. We got booked to draw at the Outback Stakehouse convention for 2 nights. It was awesome!!! There were a bazillion people (no, really) from all over the world.

I got to meet 2 of the three founders AND the guy who designed the recipe for the Bloomin’ Onion.

I’m peekin’ out behind Michael McElroy who’s leaning back. One of the most talented artists you’ll ever meet. Kenny Durkin is center. He’s supposed to be workin’ on his comic book for Chicago…so if you go to his web page or myspace…ask him how it’s goin’. Tell ‘em Jenni sent cha.

The last night the party was held at Flights of Fantasy in Lakeland, FL.

http://www.fantasyofflight.com

An absolutely incredible place. The design of the place was amazing. Very themed. The collection of aircraft is breathtaking.

If you get the chance you HAVE to go and walk amongst the ghosts and relics of days long past.

I wish I knew about aviation history. I find it fascinating. My biggest thrill was getting to see a Flying Fortress up close.

There’s huge, there’s BIG and then there’s a Flying Fortress.

Yeah, so I was all a twitter and my camera shook.

Here’s that Michael guy again.

A storm is a brewin’.

I have to say how incredible this catering staff was. This huge thunderstorm was coming in fast. I’d say within 15 minutes they had all the tables that WERE outside BACK inside and fully dressed to receive guests. They were truly amazing.

Just before the guests started to arrive, the storm started and it didn’t let up for a mighty long time. It was pretty violent.

Another cool craft.

The stands were supposed to hold the audience to see the Dave Matthews Concert.

Very few things make me squeal with utter girlish delight…but that nights entertainment sure did. The Dave Matthews Band was the entertainment and MAN! Did they sound awesome!

It doesn’t hurt that Dave Matthews is one tasty lookin’ fella.

I’ve taken up gardening. Me. Yep. Go figure. There was a reason Barry use to call me Plant Killer/ Herb Slayer.

I had NO green thumb.

Nada.

I sucked.

Maybe it’s the fact that I now have kids and am more…nurturing. Bwahahahaha!

I think it’s just ‘cuz I’m watering the damn things more.

It’s very rewarding to watch your plants grow. I’m growing quite a few herbs again (and doing VERY nicely I might add). As well as tomatoes, cucumbers, Sunflowers, and 2 lemon and 1 lime tree. The trees are very small, but I’ve got fruit on ‘em!! Woohooo!

My main thrill is peppers. I’ve been growing a lot of variety of peppers. We got to eat some of the peppers last night that I grew AND cooked. And I didn’t burn the kitchen down this time!

I still need to get better at weeding. The weeds are a tad strong in these parts.

This is the 43rd day of the year, with 323 days remaining in 2008.

Fact of the Day: fish in winter

Fish don’t go into a state of true hibernation in the winter, yet their metabolisms do slow down. Advice for fish in backyard ponds is to stop feeding entirely in November-December and to not resume again till at least March (or until the water temperature has reached 50 degrees F), and then to start with very low-protein, easily digestible foods until May or so.

Fish become much less active in the winter, don’t grow, and hardly need to eat. The only need that remains the same is that for oxygen, and when fish do die in the winter, it’s often because their supply of oxygen is used up before the ice over their habitat melts.

This weeks Toonweekly theme was: Star Wars Cantina creature
I LIKE Star Wars, dare I say I LOVED the first 3 movies (ok, I’m old school, sure) the other ones…not so much. Of course I remembered the Cantina scene…who couldn’t?!? Han Solo shot first.

Go visit my new pals at the toonweekly site. Hell, start participating!!
http://www.toonweekly.com/

We were to design our own new characters that were to be in the cantina scene. Pretty fun. So I did a couple of cool looking alien creatures that are beaugarting another chick alien creatures drink, while a jedi tries to hit on her.

I wish I could lay claim to the color job on this piece. Lucky for me, Barry took pity on me and after my feeble attempt at trying cool lighting…he graciously colored my piece. I’m very lucky to have access to one of the most talented people I’ve ever met.

Here’s a little bit of trivia about Barry. Back when we were in university at BYU Barry wrote an incredible play called ‘Blessing’.

Well, said play won LOTS of awards–oodles and tons. Barry and his talented cast and the director got sent to Arizona for a competition. This was the Rocky Mountain Theater Festival. He won and guess who he beat out–Yep. Trey Parker and Matt Stone. There ya have it.

Now, some folks take Star Wars a little too seriously. They know what color light sabers Jedi Masters have, what color acolytes have, which one is evil…
Relax, Bro. Relax.
3 people have now pointed out to me that Old Ben was the only Jedi in exestence at the time of the first Star Wars.
Folks, I don’t care. It ain’t real. Move on…
So anyway, here’s mine.
Suck it up, and move on.

Jericho returns TONIGHT!!!
Currently HBO’s The Wire is my favorite show. But I am all a twitter that Jericho returns tonight on CBS at 10 Eastern. Watch it. I WILL come to your houses, and Iwill sit your ass down and make you watch this series. Or we can be more civil about it and YOU can go to the CBS website and get caught up on the series.

http://www.cbs.com/primetime/jericho/

I have great hopes for it’s return and the numbers is should pull in. Well written, well acted (Oh! Gerald Mcraney–next time step to the left!!)

Skeet Ulrich…You tastey li’l fella.

Just do yourself a favor and give the show a try. Watch the first season. You’ll be glad you did.

What is MY favorite all time TV show? Mystery Science Theater 3000. Cool thing here. It’s no longer being produced (damn you Comedy Central and SciFi Channels!!) but Mike Nelson does something similar with his RiffTrax web site.

www.rifftrax.com

Spend an hour or two just entertaining yourself with the teasers. You’ll get some joy.

Happy thoughts!
